Stencil

1. Explain how you changed your photo in the lab to create a stencil.
In the lab we found a good picture that we were gooing to use for our stencil. after we found our picture we pasted it into photoshop. after we pasted our picture into photoshop we then used threshold to create a black and white image. then we changed the contrast of the picture to determine what areas would be black and what areas would be white. After we pick the correct setting that balanced otu the white and black in the picture we then moved on.

2. When creating the collage background explain your choices of colors, materials (magazine paper, books pages, etc), and placement. How does it relate to your topic? If no relation discuss general idea.
When creating my collage of many pictures, for the background of my stencil of Hong Kong city, i first though how i could relate it to my topic. I though how hong kong was so colorful and bright, so that's what i decided to do for my background. i went through magazines, books, newspaper, and much more to find anything that's colorful and bright. i choose many different textures and colors so i had a variety of colors on my background. Then for the placement for the collage, i randomly placed the pictures around; but keeping in mind not to put similar colors together. i wanted the colors spread out as much as possible.

3. Discuss the way positive and negative space was used to create your stencil.
During this project you had to think about positive and negative space a lot, especially while you were cutting. positive and negative space was used to create an outline of your image, so when you spray painted the stencil  onto your background your image would be very clear. while i was cutting i cut out all the negative space and just kept the positive, so that the negative space that was eliminated would be replaced by the collage background. therefore making the spray paint portion more visible.

4. When using the xacto knife, explain the safety procedures, how to use the knife and any challenges you had to overcome while cutting.
while using the xacto knife you had to take many precautions, because the knife was very harm and dangerous. while your were using the knife some of the safety procedures that you had to take were to make sure you were always cutting on the cutting board, make sure your hand was our of the way of your cutting, and to also always cutting in the opposite direction of your body; so that the knife wouldn't accidentally slip and cut yourself. however, while using the knife i can upon many challenges. some of the challenges i came across were that the knife was hard to use. you had to press extremely hard down into the paper inorder to cut it. this also cause your hand to get tired very easily. also i had rouble cutting out all of the curves and edges because it was hard to maneuver the knife in small places.
5. How was your experience with the spray paint? Discuss how color choice is important, placement of stencil, and any other concepts you noticed while creating this.

Overall the spray painting was the hardest. the first time i sprayed painted it i placed too much paint onto in their for the picture was not clear and the paint was runny. however, to fix this problem i let the paint dry and the spray painted white to create a black ground for my next layer of paint. then i made sure that my stencil of my images was down and close enough to the background, so that the spray paint would catch all of the stencil. the color choice of your stencil is very importunating because you don't want your stencil to clash with your background making it unclear on what your image is. also for your placement, you want to place your stencil where all of it will be placed on your background and also in a area that's reasonable according to your picture. as in if you have a image of a city you don't want ti floating in a random place, you would want it more close to the bottom on the background. overall the composition of the project was well done. there isn't an extra spray paint in any unwanted area, and the image came out bery clear.
